Session 5 Review

Session 5 Review: Instructional Leadership – Pedagogy in the Transformed System

Presented by: Chilliwack and Fraser Cascade School Districts

The evening focused on the premise that we are all educational “change agents”. Using the theme from Mission Impossible as a thread through the presentation, we studied Chapter Five of Fullan’s The Principal, presented and personalized a model for leading change, received feedback from a panel of practicing principals, and concluded the evening with a commitment to action.

For the final activity, participants selected an area within their sphere of influence where they could improve student learning – and created a plan to implement the change.

Session #4 Summary

In our fourth session, the teacher-leaders considered 3 areas of investigation:

1. Why the system needs to change in response to evolving needs of 21st century learners.

2. How teaching and classrooms change to create learning environments for 21st century learners.

3. What leadership competencies are required to lead schools in the new age of learning.

To understand the ‘shift’ in all three areas, teacher leaders considered the work of Michael Fullan and particularly the ‘wrong vs right’ drivers of change.

As change agents, future school leaders need to know both and must know how the best of both can be the guiding principles of action in the service of change. (Chapter 2, The Principal.)

----------

Hello Fraser Valley Teacher Leaders,

Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows and Langley School Districts, are looking forward to next week's session focused on Relationships, Emotional Intelligence and Courage.

In preparation for the session:
1. Please view the video below on Emotional Intelligence. Reflect on this video and your own experience and make some notes on your response to this statement before we meet next session.

2. Think of a leader who shows good or great emotional intelligence (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management) and give a practical example of a situation that exemplified good emotional intelligence.

3. We also encourage you to think about "Courage" and how would you define it. Can you think of a time in your educational career where you feel that you demonstrated this?

See you next week.
Laurie, Gord, Cheryl, Donna, Kirsten, Kristie, and Laureen
